After three highly successful international conferences in 2004, 2006 & 2008, the Fourth International Conference on Schizophrenia [ICONS] was held at Chennai, India between Oct. 22 and 24, 2010. This was co-sponsored by the WPA, WHO, Indian Psychiatric Society, Douglas Hospital Research Centre, Canada and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK. The conference was inaugurated by Mr.D.Napolean, Minister of state, Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India. There was good media coverage of the function.
The total number of delegates was 368 including 64 from outside India They were from Canada, USA, Australia, UK, Switzerland, Germany, France, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia and all parts of India. The number of young scholars and researchers was nearly 60%, a very heartening trend. The topics ranged from films to genetics, service delivery, MHGap programme of the WHO, and first episode psychossis.
There were 12 plenary speakers, 16 symposia and two workshops. One Workshop was on Films and suicide and the other was on Vocational Rehabilitation.
